CONTENTS
A nother month, and another round of new models from BMW –
the onslaught of new metal emerging from Munich shows no
sign of abating. The announcement of the new X4 (that you
can read about on page 10) just two days after the main press
day at the Geneva show did seem like a little bit of an oddly-
timed announcement, but could be a case of not wanting to steal the
thunder away from the 2 Series Active Tourer’s debut.
The X4 wasn’t the only new ‘Sports Activity’ machine to be announced
this month though, as at the 20th anniversary celebrations for the
Spartanburg plant in South Carolina BMW made known its intention to
build an X7 for those occasions when an X5 just isn’t large enough. It may seem like a bit of an
anathema to most of us living in the UK, but there is a market for something bigger than an X5 in
many places – witness the huge American SUVs such as the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac
Escalade. And with Mercedes now making the XL-sized GL, Audi expected to join the party with a
Q9 and the upcoming Bentley SUV BMW will need a bigger 4x4 if it’s not to lose out in the parts of
the world that covet such leviathans.
It’s fair to say that these cars aren’t really my cup of tea – even the latest X5 can be a pain to
thread along some of our roads due to its sheer bulk – but if it allows BMW to continue to offer the
type of machinery that graces our cover then I’m quite happy for it to build as many X7s as it can.
You could be forgiven for thinking that we were throwing our M235i Longtermer into the deep end
by pitching it up against the wild 1M and the brilliant all-rounder that is the E92 M3 but it really
didn’t feel out of its depth in this lauded company. BMW really does seem to have done a great job
with these M Performance cars and as a daily driver it offers a superb blend of abilities. I won’t bang
on too much about it here as there will be no point in reading the cover story that starts on page
58, but it’s safe to say that the more time we spend with the M235i the better it gets. If the oft-
mooted M2 improves significantly on the M235i it’s going to be quite a machine indeed. The only
reason I can think of why BMW won’t make it is that it might just steal too much thunder from the
upcoming M3 and M4. If BMW does build it though, and if it looks anything like the M235i Racing
track car, then we’ll really have a spiritual successor to the E30 M3 at long last.
