he month of June is a special month for me; it’s when I celebrate my birthday.
This year I’ll be turning 46, which would seem to put me conclusively in the
category of a grown-up. As I’ve often been told to ‘grow up,’ this can only be
a good thing. Perhaps this advanced age also means that I’ll have to begin
wearing long pants and shoes. Sometimes even simultaneously.
Birthdays are interesting events. They celebrate your arrival into this world; a time when
you’re ejected (or hauled) from a dark, warm place where you’ve spent nine or so months
floating in quiet, unhurried contemplation, into a brightly-lit room where you’re smacked
on the bum by the first person you ever meet. It’s good preparation for the journey that lies
ahead, but whether it’s an event to celebrate, I’m not so sure...
When you’re a laaitie , birthdays are an opportunity to acquire lots of stuff. Presents! As
well as the chance to enjoy a blowout with your mates. Cake! But our tastes change as the
years roll by... As a youngster, I can remember being appalled at the discovery that all that
my father wanted for his birthday was socks, hankies and a tin of Planters nuts. I couldn’t
think of anything worse. Why wasn’t he asking for a sports car, or - at the very least - one
of those lawnmowers you can ride on?! But I’m beginning to understand his thinking.
You see, I’ve reached the point where I have pretty much every thing that I want. So, what I
want these days aren’t things, but rather experiences. It seems that in just about every story
that crosses my desk, I discover another destination which I add to my mental I-must-go-
there list. And, besides places to visit, there’s also an ever-lengthening list of things I want
to do. They range from the ordinary – track down, identify and repair that squeak in my
Hilux – to the more daring – take an off-road caravan down Van Zyl's pass with the Hilux.
So, this year, for my birthday, I’ve written out a list of experiences that I want... umm...
to experience. And I’m giving myself a year, until my next birthday, to tackle them. It’s a
birthday that lasts a year. You can’t argue with that!
On the subject of gifts that keep on giving, it’s been very gratifying to chat with readers
who’ve been reading the magazine for the longest time. Caravan & Outdoor Life magazine
turned 54 in February this year, and there are those who’ve been on board for almost the
whole trip. Now that’s real staying power. Thanks for all the feedback.
