cannotdivedeepintohisownself.Thecouragewhichisrequiredforgoingaloneindarknights,in
darknessandinunknownandfiercepath,agreatercouragethanthatisrequiredtogointotheself,
becauseitbreaksthesweetdreamswhichonehasbuiltupabouthisownselfandbecauseasone
hastofacesuchuglyandcondemnablesinsfromwhichonehastakenhimselftoheentirelyfree.
Lookatyourselfafterremovingallyourclothes.Lookwhatyouareafterremovingallyourdoctrines.
Takeyourfaceoutofthesandsandsee....Thisopeningofeyes....toseethatwayisachange....
abeginningofanewlife.Thechangebeginsassoonastheeyesopenandwhateverwedoafter
thatleadsustotruth.
Wearetowalktothelightremovingthelayersofdarkness,towalktotheLordremovingthelayers
ofsin,toattaintheselfbydestroyingignorance.Thisistherightpathofspiritualism.Wearenotto
dreambeforethat...WearenottodreamoftheselfandtheGod......Wearenottodreamofthe
Brahmanwhichistheexistencetheknowledgeandthebliss......
Theseallarethewaysofanostrichforhidinghisfaceinthesand...Thisisnotthewayofhuman
exertion.Thisisthefalsesatisfactionofthosewhoaredevoidofpowerforexertion.

Ipeepintoyoureyes.Iseethereatorture,anintensepainandadeepsorrow.Ifindinthemnot
thelightandcheeroflife,butathickdarknessanddisappointment,whichisopposedtolife.Ifind

therenotthemusicofindividualitybutasorrowfultuneofdisorder.Allbeauty,alltunefulness,all
proportionshavebeenshattered.Perhapstocallourselvesasindividualsmayalsobeincorrect.To
beanindividual,werequireafocus,adefiniteorganization;thatisnotthere.Weareinastateof
disorderintheabsenceofthatindividuality,organizationandfocus.
Manhasbrokendown.Somethingveryvaluableinhimhasbeenlostandshattered.Itlooksas
thoughwearetheremnantsofabrokenorder.ThatordercouldbeseeninMahavira,Buddhaand
Christ.Theywereindividualsbecausetheywerenotadisorderlyclusterofbrokentunes;theywere
music;becausetheywerenottheblindracefullofself-contradictions;theyhadadefinitemotion
anddirection.
Lifegetsintomotioninhappinessafterfindingitsfocusanddirection.Toattaintheindividuality,and
thetunefulnesshiddeninit,islikeopeningthegatesofreallife.Beforethat,lifeisnotarealitybut
onlyapossibility;itisafuture.
Thetragedyofthesplitofman’sindividualityhasoccurredallovertheworld.Wehavebrokenaway
andgotseparatedfromourownselves.Itislikeacirclewhichhaslostitscentreandofwhichonly
thecircumferenceremains.Wearerunningonthecircumferenceoflife,willkeeprunning,andthen
falldown;andevenforamomentwewillnotknowwhatiscalledrestandpeace.Ourconditionis
likethatofthebullockyokedinanoil-expeller.
Lifeisnotthecircumferencealone;itisalsothecentre.Withoutknowingthis,allefforts,allmotions
areultimatelyuseless,meaningless.Intheabsenceofthisknowledge,allstreamsoflabourtaketo
theoceanofmisery.Thereareonlyactionsonthecircumferenceoflife;thepowerisnotthere.I,
myexistence,mybeingisnotthere.InmyprovedexistenceIamabsentonthesurface.Icannot
befoundonthesurfaceofaction.WhatIamcanbefoundfardeeperandinotherdepths.Without
knowingthatdepth,withoutestablishingarelationinaveryfamiliarwaywiththeinnerself,lifeisan
illusion;itisatiresomejourney.Withoutestablishingrelationwiththisselfandthispower,lifecannot
gettransformedintoapleasure-trip.
Iamremindedofanuprootedtree.WhenIthinkabouttheman,thetreeautomaticallycomesto
mymind.Idonotknowwhy,Icannotthinkofmanasdifferentfromthetree.Perhapsbecauseof
theroots,thissimilaritysurroundsmymind.Ifanindividualgetsuprootedfromthecentreofhis
existence,helookslikeanuprootedtree.Hewhodoesnotknowhisownformislosingrootsinhis
existence.Howsurprisingitisthatwearegettingunfamiliarwithourownselves,asifthatsideis
notworthknowing,asifthatisnosideatall!Ifperchance,itmeetsus,ifsuddenlywemeettheself,
thenwewillhavetobecomespeechlessonseeingtheonethatmeets;itwillinnocasebepossible
torecognizeit.Ourrootshavelostgroundfromtheself,fromourownnature.Wearepresentbut
notinourselves.Weknoweveryoneelse,butareunfamiliarandstrangerstoourselves.Onthe
outside,knowledgehasincreased,butinsideignorancehasbecomethicker.’Darknessunderthe
lamp’hasbecomeatruesaying.Powerhasbeengainedbutpeacehasbeenlost.Therehasbeen
expansion,butnodepthhasbeengained.Wehavebeensurroundedbyimbalanceandpartiality.
Asthoughatreehasgrownlargerontheoutsidebuthollowinitsroots;themanhasalsometa
similarfate.Thishasgivenbirthtopain,sadnessandsorrow.Theshadowofdisappointmentand
ofthecomingdeathpersists,justasitsohappenswhentherootsofatreebecomelooseinthe
earth.Mantoohashisrootsandhisearth;thistruthhastobere-announced.Thisverybasictruth
hasbeenforgotten.Becauseofthisoblivion,wearegraduallylosingourrootsbyourselves.Weare

busyinacontinuousprocessofsuicide.Thislossofrootsiscontinuallytakingustothedeepestof
pain,sorrowanddeath.
Ifindindividualafterindividualcircumscribedbyunhappiness;anditmayberememberedthatifone
individualisunhappy,hebecomesthecauseofunhappinessformanyothers.IfIamunhappyIwill
inevitablybecomethecauseofunhappinessforothers.WhateverIam,isrevealedinmybehaviour;
thisisonlynatural,becauseinmyrelations,Iputandpourmyownself;anythingelseisnotpossible.
Inmyrelations,myownpictureandmyowntunesarethere.Iammyselfreflectedandresounding
inthem.Iammyselfpresentthere.Iftherefore,Iamunhappy,ifIaminpain,thenunhappiness
alonewillflowfrommeandspreadout.Asinatank,ripplesstartfromasmallcentreandspreadout
tolongdistances,similarlytheripplesthatgainlifefrommyindividualcentredonotremainlimited
tomealone;theirechoescanbeheardfar,faraway.Whathappensinanindividual,spreadsoutin
theatmosphereveryquickly.Betweentheindividualandtheuniversal,therearenosetboundaries.
Theyareconnectedandco-communicativeinseveralways.
IfIamunhappy,Iwillalsogiveunhappinesstoothers.EvenifIdonotwish,itwillkeeponflowing
frommeeverymoment.Thatishelplessness,becauseIcangiveonlywhatIpossess.Icannot
givewhatIdonothaveevenifIwish.Inourrelations,wegiveourownselves,notourwishes.Not
merelymywishes,butmygoodnessisnecessary.Itisnotthedream,itistherealitywhichcanbe
receivedorgiven.Therefore,manypeopleareunabletogivehappiness,peaceorlovetoothersin
spiteoftheirwish.Theirgoodintentionsarebeyonddoubt,butthatisnotenough.Theirdreamsare,
nodoubt,beautiful;butintheworldofrealitytheireffectisnotmorethantheeffectoflinesdrawn
onwater.Theycanbeusedforliterature,butnotforlife.Wewishtoimparthappiness–andwho
wouldnotliketodoso–butwecangiveonlyunhappinessandmisery.Wewanttogivelove,but
whatweareabletogivedoesnotproduceevenadistanttuneoflove;andthenwhatanemptiness,
failureandfutilitydoweexperience.Howlostanddefeatedeverythinglooks.Inthesemomentsof
defeat,allsenseofdirectionislost,allpurposefulnessislost,allmeaningislost,whatisleftbehind
isthemiseryofloneliness.asifwehavebeenleftallaloneiIItheworld.Inthesemoments,wecan
realiseourownpowerlessnessandhelplessness.
Theresultsofgoodintentionsanddreamsarenotfavourablebecauserealityisagainstthem.The
riveroflifedoesnotreachtheoceanofmeaningfulnessandsuccess;itseemstobedisappearing
anddryingupinthedesertofuselessnessanddissatisfaction.Ifinthisstateofrealisationofthe
meaninglessnessofmindthereistheslightestawakening,thenaverydeep-seatedillusioncanbe
broken;andinthelightemanatingfromthebreakingofthatillusiontheindividualcanbeawakened
tothebasictruthoflife.Inthelightofthatawakening,itcanbeseenthatthemeaninglessnessis
notbornfromtheinnerrealityoflife;itisbothfromtheunrealconvictionthatwhatisnotpossessed
bytheselfcanalsobegiventosomeoneelse;fromtheignorancethatthefragrancewhichisnotin
mecanalsobediffused.Thisignoranceisverydeep-rooted.Thosewhoaredevoidoflove,want
togivelove;thosewhoaredevoidofpleasurewanttodistributepleasure;thepoorgetafflictedand
agitatedwiththedreamsofdistributingriches.
Ifindthatwhatisnotwilltheselfcannotbegiveneither.Nologicorevidenceisnecessarytoprove
it.Itisclearandself-evidentlikethesun;perhapsitisclearerthanthesunitself,becauseevenif
theeyesarenottherethiscanbeseen.Butthisisonlyonesideofthecoin;thereistheotherside
also.Thatismoreinvisible.Sometimesitissosurprisingthatwhatissocloseandeasytoknow
canbeforgottenbyus.Perhapswhatisveryclearandveryclosestopsbeingvisiblebecauseofits
verynearness.

Theothersideisthatwhatisnotwiththeselfcannotbeobtainedfromothers.Itisofcoursenot
possibletogivewhatisnotintheself;itisalsonotpossibletoreceiveit.Whatevercanbereceived
fromothersshouldbeavailableintheselfbeforeitcanbereceived.Thenalonetherecanbeamnity
andreceptivityforit.IcanacceptonlywhatIam.Ihavethedoorsandthepowertoattractthat
alone.Weseehowfromthesameearthdifferentplantsabsorbdifferentforms,coloursandsmells.
Whateverisnaturalinthemalsocomestothem.Whatevertheyare,theyalsoreceive.Thisisthe
law;thisistheeternalscheme.Inordertogetlove,itisnecessarytobefulloflove.IHewhois
fullofhatred,invitesonlyhatred.Hewhohasfilledhimselfwithpoisoninvitesonlyaflowofpoison
towardshimfromthewholeworld.Thelikecallforandarethirstyforthelike;soalsothepersons
ofthesameclass.Hewhowantsnectarwillhavetogetfilledwithnectar.HewhowantsGodwill
havetoawakenhisGodinhimself.Whateveryouwantyoushouldbecome.Whomsoeveryouwant
tomeet,youshouldbecomelikehim.Inordertobehappy,itisnecessarytohavehappinessinyou.
Itisnecessarytobecomehappinessitself.Happinessalonecanwelcomeandaccepthappiness.
Donotweobservethatamiserablemindcansearchoutmiseriesevenwheretheyhardlyexist?
Thetorturedonefindsouttorture.Thedepressedonefindsoutdepression.Infact,theyselectwith
whattheyhaveaffinity.Whatsoeverisinsideisselected;andthesameisthrownoutandinstalled
inothers.whateverweare,wesearchout.Theworldanditsconditionsareamirrorinwhich,from
differentanglesandindifferentforms,wecanseeourselves.
WhateverIgive,ismyself.WhateverIreceiveisalsomyself.Exceptmyownself,Ihavenoexistence
andnoexperience.Itisnotpossibletogooutsideit.Thatistheworld,thatissalvation,thatispain
andthatispleasure;thatisviolenceandthatisnon-violence;thatispoisonandthatisnectar.
Iamremindedofadiscussionheldonthegateofatemple.Theflagofthetemplewasflutteringin
themorningbreeze.Seeingthatflagflying,inthegoldenraysofthesun,tomonkswerediscussing
betweenthemselveswhetherthestirwasintheflagorinthewind.Athirdmonkpassingnearby,
said:”Friend,thestirisinthemind.”
True!Allagitationisinthemindandofthemind.
IfIdonotforget,Mahavir,whosaid:Thissoulistheenemy;theselfitselfisthefriend.”
Thepuredevelopmentofsoulisnon-violence;theimpuredevelopmentofthesoulisviolence.
Thatisnotanindicationofbehaviourbutmainlyofthespirit.Thereislotofconsiderationgiven
topurityofbehaviour.Thatgraspandreach,asIsee,iswrong.Wehavetoachievethepurity
ofspiritratherthanthatofbehaviour.Behaviourcanchangeonitsown.Itisthefollowerofspirit.
Iftheknowledgeischanged,behaviouralsochanges.Knowledgeisthebaseandthecentre;
behaviouristhereflectionofthesame.Theformeristhelife;behaviourhasitsthrob.Socrates
hassaid:”Knowledgeitselfischaracter”.Themeaningofknowledgeisnotthe’information’or
learnedness;themeaningofknowledgeis:realizationreceivedfromtheperceptionofintellect,
spiritandexistence.Thisknowledge,thisawakening,istherevolutionoftheintellectitself.Theso-
calledknowledge,bornfromthecollectedthoughts,isunabletobringaboutthisrevolution,because
inrealitythatisnoknowledgeatall.Thatisneithergenuinenordoesitbelongtotheself;thatisall
borrowed.Thatistakenoutfromsomebodyelse’sexperience;andis,therefore,deadandlifeless.
Theexperienceoftheselfbecomesdeadwhenitchangeshands.Thereisnowayoftransferring
italiveandliving.Notthetruth,butonlythewordsthatcanreach.Theknowledgethatisbased
merelyonthosewordscansurelyincreasetheburden;butsalvationisnotattainedthroughit.
