TIMES REALLY HAVE CHANGED
WITH the advent of Nitro Athletics commanding so
much attention and creating so much discussion — not
to mention our very own thought-provoking State of
the Nation series in
AW
— the subject of evolution and
change in athletics has very much been in the air of late.
To get some perspective on how the sport really has
altered in recent times, however, then the start of our
new series which will guide you through the history of
the world championships is a great place to begin.
This week, Steve Smythe has delved into the first
championships, which took place in Helsinki in 1983,
and even a simple look at the event schedule reveals
a great deal. For example, the furthest women were
allowed to run on the track then was 3000m — equality
between the sexes was still
some way off.
Thankfully we’ve moved
on somewhat from that
state of affairs but sadly
then, as now, the issue of
doping in central Europe
was also prevalent.
Some of the action and
performances were
unforgettable, however,
and here’s hoping there
will be more memorable
moments to come at the
next world championships
when they land in London this summer.
Reaching peak performance in early August will, of
course, be the focus for so many of our athletes and
the next step for a number of British medal hopefuls will
come at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham.
And what a meeting that promises to be.
With Mo Farah (pictured above), back in Britain, Laura
Muir looking to break more records and a whole host
of newly-crowned British champions hot footing it from
the indoor trials in Sheffield — which produced some
fine perfomances — there will be no shortage of incident
and intrigue. The anticipation level is definitely about
to move up a notch in what is already proving to be an
exceptional athletic year.
Of course, the format in Birmingham will be a little
more traditional compared to the Nitro Athletics events
in Melbourne. The comments of
