HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD CROSS
IMAGINE the sight of Mo Farah leading a British
men’s team of Callum Hawkins, Andy Butchart,
Tom Farrell, Ben Connor and Andy Vernon at the
IAAF World Cross Country Championships on Sunday.
Sadly, though, none are interested in racing in Kampala
in an event that was once described as the greatest
footrace in the world.
At this weekend’s event a total of 33 African nations
will outnumber the 26 non-African countries taking
part (see p54-55). Compare this with the inaugural
championship in 1973 where only two of the 21
competing nations were from Africa.
The status of the World Cross has been sliding
for years and the reasons for its demise
and many and varied. There is probably
no single solution to resurrect it, but
there are a number of obvious ideas to
reinvigorate it.
Firstly, the sport should push hard for
Olympic status at the Winter Games.
Apart from helping to increase the profile
of cross country, it would lead to the
sport receiving Lottery funding.
Every effort should be made to get
the World Cross into glamorous, big-city
venues like New York’s Central Park or
London’s Parliament Hill. Change the
date so it avoids the spring road running season and
major indoor dates. Ensure the course is tough and
challenging rather than a glorified track race on grass.
Increase the prize money if possible. Senior winners
in Kampala earn $30,000 but this is dwarfed by
potential marathon earnings.
Work hard to persuade the global stars like Farah
to compete. When the world’s No.1 distance runner
doesn’t show any interest, it sends a message to
everyone that it’s not an important race.
After Kampala, the event moves to Aarhus in 2019,
where the Danish organising team is promising to try
to innovate the event. It sounds promising and IAAF
president Seb Coe is also known to be keen to inject
fresh life into the event.
Above all, they need to get more athletes and nations
to turn up. Only then will it have a chance of being able
to call itself the greatest footrace in the world again.
