The men marketing fighter planes built in France
delight in explaining their aircraft’s extensive combat
experience and export success. Those in Sweden take
great satisfaction from explaining the combat, export
and design success of their jet. And their counterparts
in Germany love to discuss how they are building aircraft
and developing extensive future capabilities.
The Texans, on the other hand, don’t know what to holler
about first. They’ve already built thousands of F-16s.
They’re still building F-16s. They’re set to continue
building F-16s.
The F-16 was the first fighter capable of pulling 9g “right
off the runway”. Its design is pleasing to the eye. Its
performance, when slick, is eye watering. Its capabilities
are – in every sense – truly multi-role. It performs every
modern tactical combat mission. It’s been in production
for over 40 years and has been involved in all the major
conflicts of our time.
Designed by General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas, the
prototype YF-16, serial number 72-1567, was flown for
the first time by Phil Oestricher at Edwards Air Force
Base, California on February 2, 1974.
The first production Block 1 F-16A for the US Air Force,
serial number 78-0001, was delivered to Edwards on
September 6, 1978. The US Air Force took delivery of
2,231 Fighting Falcons the last of which, Block 50 F-16C
serial number 01-7053, was delivered to Shaw Air Force
Base on March 25, 2005 – 9,698 days later.
Twenty-five nations currently operate the F-16. The US
Air Force has the largest fleet, with dozens of aircraft
deployed and is operating with America’s coalition
partners conducting dangerous missions taking the fight
to their foes.
The F-16 remains the most prolific fighter aircraft of its
generation, combat proven, affordable and still in the
race for fighter aircraft competitions around the world –
a very capable aircraft, born
and raised in Texas.
