Just to give glimpse of the potential of technological
upgradation in electronics sector, by 2019-20 as per
the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) forecast,
India is expected to produce 520 million phones and
this would require about 170 SMT lines. By 2025, it
is expected that India will produce 1.2 billion phones.

This translates into about 415 SMT lines. There will be many more SMT
lines for the component players also, for e.g. Charger and Battery pack

In the mobile and component manufacturing space, SMT machines
are a major capital cost. Certain sections of the industry are apprehensive
that populated PCBs of mobile phones may not attract basic custom duty
in 2018 and hence are wary of investing in SMT machines. To meet the
PMP target of 520 million phones in 2019-2020, it is imperative that the
investment process should be finished by 1st quarter of 2018. While some
sections of the industry want SMT operations to start with immediate
effect, there are others who feels strongly that India is not ready for it and
this should be postponed for another two years. I am personally of the firm
belief that time is ripe to migrate to superior manufacturing practices if we
indeed wish to become an electronics major. Let’s leap frog!
In this regard, I happy to inform that Indian Cellular Association
supported Centre for Development of Electronics System Design and
Manufacturing (C-ESDM), a body dedicated to the nation and committed
to build electronic design and manufacturing industry in India, has been
doing seminal work to create enabling policy environment and to enlighten
the industry about the benefits of new technological adoption.
On policy front, I once again reiterate as I had stated at an industry
forum recently, India needs to do a lot more and quickly to remove irritants
to investment and manufacturing. Time is indeed running out.
As a telecom and mobile industry stakeholder, I am happy to note
that there finally appears to be the much desired thaw in the telecom
space which had witnessed bitter tariff war. One is optimistic that a more
enlightened competition will take place which will, above all, speed up the
digital march of the country without fatally damaging the service providers
themselves. We definitely need healthy or even disruptive competition in
telecom space but there should be no space for annihilatory practices.
