process of transitioning from open-cockpit monoplanes like the P-26
to the P-36 Mohawk and the higher-performance P-40 Warhawk. On
that Sunday morning, pilots recovering from hangovers and pilots still
in church raced to get into the air. All of them were flying one of these
two types. Today, the P-40B/C and the P-36A are part of the Fighter
Collection based at Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire, England. As

their range and ability to fight put them in a class by themselves. They
became victims of their own success, however: They were so dominant
early in the war that Japan felt no pressure to design or produce

Cataclysmic events occur in the
context of their time and place,
often subject to unknown or
unforeseeable influences. The
Great Depression usually is seen
as the result of plummeting stock
prices and/or failed banks; the
Cuban Missile Crisis was driven by the Cold War. Pearl Harbor occurred after a decade of Japanese
expansionism in China, leading to Western sanctions against Tokyo. Faced with capitulation or war,
Tokyo chose war. This article examines factors behind that decision.

When I first interviewed Besby
Holmes, it was about his P-38
days later in the war and
his involvement in the Adm.
Yamamoto shootdown. I had
no idea that he was one of the
Pearl Harbor veterans who not
only clawed his way to the sky
in response to the attack but also got shot at by trigger-happy U.S. servicemen. Besby ended up
defending American soil with what was available, including a P-26 Peashooter.

Most of my life has been spent
rediscovering lost history, first
as a diver in the discovery of the
Spanish galleon
Atocha
and her
treasure, and later digging into
the events of World War II. As the
founding restoration director of
the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl
Harbor, I, along with my wife KT, discovered the existence of the Niihau Zero. I wrote the full story of
the event in the book
Before and Beyond the Niihau Zero.
It is a little-known unique episode in the
Pearl Harbor attack.

There were no archivists to
log USAAF aircraft sorties
on December 7. Yet pilot and
ground-crew memories produced
names and many aircraft. This
article is the first to render honor
to those brave men and gives
recognition to those who gave the
sortie orders. The mystery of the 25+ men to get in the air at 0930 may never be totally solved.

Out for a Sunday Ride
The study of civil aviation above Oahu during the attack
is difficult due to the confiscation of the records of John
Rodgers Field by martial-law decree. The three unknown
students airborne in civilian planes are now revealed—and
their connections to each other. For the two civilian Piper
Cubs shot down, the fourth “almost passenger” is finally
identified as well as who did what to whom, thanks in part
to a Japanese pilot witness.
