The RoyalAir ForceBattle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAFBBMF)was formed
-
as the HistoricAircraft Flight - at RAFBiggin Hill on July 11, 1957,with
three Spitfire PRMk XIXs and one Hawker Hurricane.
oday the RAF BBMF'sfabulous collection
of historic aircraft includes two of those
original Spitfire PRMk XIXs and the original
Hurricane (LF363),with the addition of
four more Spitfires, another Hurricane,
one of only two airworthy Avro Lancasters
in the world, and a Douglas C-47 Dakota, as well as two
de Havilland Chipmunks. These aircraft are maintained in
airworthy condition and flown to commemorate all those
who have lost their lives in service with the Royal Air Force
in the 100 years since its inception.
The Flight's Second World War aircraft have all survived
the odds to be here in flying condition today. In the many
decades since they were built and delivered to the Royal Air
Force they have each worn many colour schemes and code
letters, both before their time with the BBMF and since.
This publication is a labour of love by renowned aviation
artist Chris Sandham-Bailey to research, catalogue and,
best of all, to illustrate all of the colour schemes worn
by the BBMF aircraft since they were first constructed.
Chris' meticulous research and attention to detail have

uncovered some lost history of the BBMF aircraft, and he
has produced aircraft colour profiles of incredible accuracy
and authenticity.
Never before have all of the BBMF aircraft liveries
over the years been catalogued and illustrated in one
publication. Here you can see them both as Chris' aircraft
profile artworks and in rare photographs.
This publication is a must for anyone with an interest
in the BBMF aircraft and their histories, and it makes a
brilliant reference document.
As you revel in the details and the pictures I hope that
you will also remember those courageous airmen who flew
these aircraft and others of the same and similar types 'in
anger' to defend our freedom during the Second World
War, especially those who paid the ultimate price. o

Author's note: Due to limitations of space it has not been possible to cover all the aircraft that
have been operated over the years by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight or its predecessor the
Historic Aircraft Flight, nor has it been possible to cover every single scheme the featured aircraft
have worn due to a lack of corroborative photographic evidence in some cases. Some schemes
such as AB910's MD-Ewere worn both during the war and again between 1994 and 1996, in such
cases the scheme has only been illustrated once, where there have been significant variations the
different schemes do feature.
