Notes From Normandy
The proximity of
Normandy to Britain,
and the sheer importance of the
Normandy Landings of D-Day June 6,
means that the area of the beachheads
has long been a magnet for veterans
of the campaign, military vehicle
enthusiasts and those interested in
World War Two history.
Inevitably, as time passes, the nature
of the commemorations are changing;
the number of veterans attending is
shrinking rapidly but the number of
military vehicle owners visiting with
their vehicles is increasing. This year, on
behalf of CMV, photographer Ian Clegg
and I joined the annual pilgrimage to
Normandy and you can read about
our trip on page 76. This issue also
marks D-Day with its centre spread and
collectable books sections.
There were plenty of British enthusiasts
present this year but we were surprised
to see that most of the vehicles we saw
were American and aside from British-
marked Jeeps and numerous British
bikes, the majority of vehicles and
re-enactors were in American vehicles
The British military cemetery at Bayeux is the largest British World War Two cemetery in France and is located
close to the centre of the historic city
and uniforms. The cost and logistics of
moving old lorries to France must have
a bearing on this so it’s perhaps no
surprise that the smaller and plentiful
vehicles such as Jeeps and Dodge
WCs were in the majority. Nonetheless,
I am certain that it will be a different
story next year when the major 75th
anniversary is marked and that there
will be a much greater number of British
vehicles to be seen.
