Welcome
am surprised that [many] young people don’t
know what The Holocaust is. You have to explain
it to them. When I am not here anymore I hope that
somebody, like you, will remind the world that it did
happen”. These words, spoken recently by 88-year-old
Hetty Verolme to the BBC, struck a chord with me and
reminded me why I chose this profession.
Hetty survived the horrors of Bergen-Belsen during World War Two and has
now made it her business to honour the memory of those who did not. Her
words were not spoken with bitterness, or even sadness, but with genuine
concern. Hetty wonders what will happen when she is no longer alive to
inform others.
To me, the importance of learning from history is beyond measure.
People often ask why FlyPast frequently publishes new articles to mark the
anniversaries of events like the Battle of Britain or D-Day or, in this issue, the
Dambusters raid which took place 75 years ago. It’s a fair question, given that
these subjects have been written about and scrutinised time and time again.
The answer, quite simply, is that people are discovering and learning about
these important matters for the rst time each and every month. They are
mostly, but not exclusively, younger people. The notion that teenagers – some
separated by three or more generations from the events of World War Two – are
not interested is utterly false. But people are not born with knowledge. The need

to tell these stories, in new and interesting ways where possible, has never been
more important.
This month, we’ve tried to do exactly that in our feature about Operation
‘Chastise’, the Dambusters attack involving the historic ‘bouncing-bomb’ , the
brainchild of Barnes Wallis. To mark this important anniversary, I managed to
extract myself from the comfort of my of ce chair and took a trip to Germany
with members of my family. We visited two of the three dams and other sites
connected to the raid, including the graves of Wg Cdr Guy Gibson and many of
the other men involved. A friend of mine is a distant relation to Daniel Allatson,
who ew as a gunner on ‘Chastise’. I’d never heard of Daniel prior to meeting
her, so I went about uncovering as much of his story as I could, culminating in
a moving visit to his nal resting place in Germany. His death at the age of 19,
just months after surviving the most legendary of ‘ops’, seems to me an apt
illustration of the sheer tragedy of war. We hope you enjoy this issue and that
you will join us in our passion to keep history alive for those who will bene t
most from it. Let’s do it for Daniel; let’s do it for Hetty.
