otor show extravaganzas like the one held in Geneva recently
provide a glimpse of what car manufacturers have in store for us
in the coming years. While some concepts provide insight into
future models and styling directions, others are pure fantasy,
reflections of designer and management egos. This month
we have details on some of the Geneva highlights with real world relevance,
including the lowdown on Jeep’s new baby SUV.
The state of NZ motoring should be safer in future after an announcement
from the Government that it intends to make electronic stability control (ESC) a
mandatory requirement for all vehicles imported into New Zealand. The initiative
will affect all new vehicles from July 2015. A perusal of the new car price list in the
back of the magazine reveals only a handful of new entrants that actually need
to be upgraded to meet the new standards. Though some of utility variants may
have to be dropped, and also old-school offroaders like Jimny and Defender,
ESC will be a welcome addition to myriad Chinese-made vehicles that lack this
potentially lifesaving technology.
The new law will be introduced in stages for imported used vehicles, with 4x4s
and SUVs requiring the stability function from January 2016, while passenger cars
with engine capacities greater than 2000cc will require it from January 2018. All
other used light passenger and goods vehicles will require ESC from January 2020.
Mercedes-Benz first introduced the safety technology on its S-Class line in the
mid-nineties, and its research in the following years indicated it can reduce the
rate of single vehicle accidents by as much 30 per cent.
Not only will this new government initiative help make our passenger fleet
safer but hopefully it will also have an impact on its average age. Currently that
is estimated at 13 years, but there are more than one million cars registered in
New Zealand that are 15 years or older.
My number one tip for people looking for a second-hand car is to buy the
newest vehicle they can afford to gain the benefits of all the convenience and
safety equipment that have been loaded into cars over the past few years. As the
imports slowly catch up on safety items such as ESC, new cars race ahead with
an array of innovative active safety features. Even humble compact offerings
like the recently released Mazda3 have auto-braking and forward warning
systems to mitigate nose-to-tail crashes. Andrew Clearwater, Mazda NZ MD and
President of the Motor Industry Association representing the interests of the
new vehicle industry, said at the launch of the new Mazda3 that the government
announcement on ESC was a positive move. But he added that the M.I.A. would
like to see a rolling seven-year age restriction on used imports to improve the
average age of the country’s car park and by implication its safety, fuel economy
and emissions. We say that’s a fair call.
Here’s something to ponder though. New cars like the Mazda3 are much more
fuel efficient, meaning less of a tax take at the pump for the Government. So in
the next few years don’t be surprised if the Revenue Minister looks to implement
road user charges on all vehicles.

to him. Meantime, there’s not much sleep happening at Casa Cassidy with the
