The four-speed automatic transmission has
received many upgrades since it was first
introduced in 1990. Changes have been made to
the way range shifts are controlled, the method
used to mechanically bypass the torque
converter, to the internal gear ratios, and to
many other systems, all the while maintaining
the basic external appearance of the original.
These changes resulted in different versions
(phases) of the transmission; the first of which
is referred to as ‘Phase 0’ (zero).
The four-speed automatic transmission utilizes
just one planetary gearset. Combined with three
clutches (K1, K2, and K3), two brakes (B1 and
B2), and one freewheeling clutch (F), this
Ravigneaux gearset produces four forward and
one reverse range, plus Manual Low.
