000 (early fall)
Kara looked up at the sky, through a small hole in the stone wall.
It only offered her a glimpse, but that had been enough to help
her remain strong during her stay, and to help her focus on the
idea of escape. On the other side of the wall, the tiny window was
located just above the ground. Inside however, it was just below
the ceiling, well above her head. Kara was underground, in a
shadowy cellar.
Kara turned around, and went to sit on the side of the crude bed,
which was nothing more than a large, rough wooden crate filled
with hay and a couple worn blankets. She took a deep breath,
then exhaled slowly after a moment, trying to control her anxiety.
Today,
she thought to herself. Kara wrapped her arms around
herself, trying to keep from shivering. Of all things, it was the
cold that made her suffer the most. Even when the sun shone
generously outside, it remained chilly within. It was as if the dark
stones of her cell, always somehow moist to the touch, soaked up
the warmth, withholding it from her.
Slow and heavy footsteps could be heard above, walking on the
massive wooden floor of the room located at ground level. Kara’s
excellent sense of hearing had discovered patterns in the lives of
those that occupied the building under which she was held. There
were three voices, belonging to humans. Once daily, one of these
would come down to bring her something to eat. She knew the
faces that went with the voices, and while she didn’t care about
these people at all, Kara had quickly learned that one of them was
a bit slower than the others, likely a result of the combination of
