The years between 1913 and 1935 were an
exciting period for the aircraft industry,
when the technological development of a
method of transport still in its infancy was
inevitably speeded up by World War 1.
Although the emphasis between 1914-1918
was on building faster and more maneuver-
able aircraft, the fighting nations were also
producing much larger planes. One example
described here is the Handley Page 0/100
heavy bomber, the ‘Bloody Paralyser,’
which had a wingspan of nearly 100 ft -
making it a very large plane even by modern
standards.
Classics of the Air is a fascinating galaxy of
aircraft from those all-important years, all
the planes mentioned making their maiden
flights in this period. The development
history of each of the 31 selected aircraft is
given in depth with black and white and
color photographs and illustrations,
together with wonderfully detailed cutaway
drawings. Many of the black and white
photographs in these pages are now unique
historical documents.
This is an important and captivating book
for anyone interested in the history of the
airplane in general and the veteran planes
in particular, some of which were still flying
with airforces and civil airlines even after
World War 2. The indestructible Douglas
DC-3, for example, is in active use today -
half a century after its maiden flight.
